‘Streets Were Filled With Fans, Nobody Cared About COVID’: Babil Khan Recalls His Father Irrfan’s Passing

Late actor Irrfan’s death left a huge mark on the entertainment industry. He passed away in 2020, having battled neuroendocrine tumor, two-years after he was diagnosed with the disease. His son Babil Khan is currently finding his footing in Bollywood. While being praised for his natural screen presence and acting chops, he often finds himself in the news for his statements and being ‘too honest’ and ‘naive’ during media interactions. Having been subjected to online trolling for quite some time, he recently opened up about the moment that stayed with him after his father’s passing, and addresses rumours of him using his death to advance his career.

In an interaction with Lallantop, he opened up about the speculations of exploiting his father’s legacy to boost his Bollywood career. While he admitted that the online criticism doesn’t faze him as much, he wasn’t prepared for it before. Recalling his father’s untimely passing, he shared that he wasn’t ready for it, especially as the limelight shifted on him. However, a particular moment stuck with him.

Quoted by News18, the 26-year-old actor says, “But there was one moment that’s stayed with me. When Baba’s body was being taken from the hospital to the funeral, the streets were filled with fans, even during COVID. Nobody cared about the risk. They just wanted to say goodbye. They were crying. It felt so real.”

Addressing the speculations that he used his father’s death to launch his acting career, Khan said, “Some people said I was using my father’s death to launch my acting career. If that were true, I wouldn’t still be giving auditions today. I was sharing love because we were flooded with it from everyone. I had to honour that.”

Having made his Bollywood debut with Triptii Dimri starrer Qala, he rose to fame with his down-to-earth, gentlemanly personality and views on feminism. While he racked in love for it, a section of netizens also trolled him for it. He went on to star in the web series The Railway Men and movie Friday Night Plan, both of which premiered on the streaming platform Netflix.

Babil Khan is currently seen in Logout, which is streaming on Zee5. Co-starring Gandharv Dewan and Rasika Dugal, the Amit Golani directorial released on April 18, 2025. The film follows the journey of a popular social media user Pratyush Dua, who mysteriously loses his phone. As a result, his digital life spirals out of control and chaos ensues.
