Hibiscus holds a significant place in Ayurveda due to its powerful medicinal properties. With regular use, it is believed to help cure several health issues. Here are the various benefits of the hibiscus flower.

Benefits of Hibiscus Flower

Dr Pramod Anand Tiwari (MD, BAMS) of Babe’s Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital, Punjab, explains that hibiscus flowers are packed with medicinal properties.

  • In Ayurveda, hibiscus is also referred to as Japa. It is widely used for therapeutic purposes and in religious offerings. It is particularly beneficial for hair-related issues. Applying a paste made from hibiscus flowers can help reduce dandruff and add shine to the hair. When mixed with amla (Indian gooseberry) powder, it helps maintain the natural black colour of the hair for a longer period.
  • Insomnia, often caused by stress or lack of sleep, can be alleviated with hibiscus. Drinking a sherbet made from hibiscus flowers and sugar candy can help induce better sleep and reduce the symptoms of insomnia.
  • Hibiscus is also known to treat leucorrhoea in women. Grinding its buds and consuming them has proven to be beneficial. Regular intake of hibiscus flower powder with milk, morning and evening, helps combat anaemia by increasing haemoglobin levels and strengthening immunity. It is also effective in addressing issues related to menstruation.
  • In cases where digestive issues or body heat lead to mouth ulcers, hibiscus root can provide relief. After thoroughly cleaning the root, it should be chewed like a betel leaf. This practice helps heal painful mouth ulcers.
  • Hibiscus flowers can also help relieve constipation. During a high fever, consuming a decoction made from hibiscus leaves can lower body temperature and offer relief from cough and cold.
  • Hibiscus is also known to support heart health and may assist in the treatment of cardiovascular conditions.
